We wanted to reach out to you as a courtesy, to make sure you are aware of a new requirement from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in regards to medicated animal feed. You are receiving this letter because you have purchased products that will be impacted by these new regulations from us in the past.
The new federal requirement is called the “Veterinary Feed Directive” or VFD. It will require that specific animal drugs that are intended to be “used in or on animal feed” will “require the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.”
A VFD (which is also referred to as a VFD order) “is a written statement issued by a licensed veterinarian in the course of the veterinarian’s professional practice that authorizes the use of a VFD drug or combination VFD drug in or on animal feed. This written statement authorizes the client (the owner of the animal or animals or other caretaker) to obtain and use animal feed bearing or containing a VFD drug…to treat the client’s animals only in accordance with the conditions for use approved… by the FDA.”
Starting January 1, 2017 you would need to have a VFD from your veterinarian to purchase certain medicated feed for your animals.

The FDA is putting great responsibility on manufacturers and retailers to manage the supply chain of VFD products with this initiative. As a results many manufacturers, retailers and even distributors are making the choice to completely stop producing and/or selling these VFD products. Fortunately, the Kent Nutrition Group (KNG) has made the decision to continue manufacturing Blue Seal Branded VFD feed and the company owned Blue Seal Stores will continue to supply the end consumer. After January 1, 2017 VFD products will not be sold without a valid VFD. We have enclosed a brochure from the FDA with more information.
